Consider spell slots to be the number of casts you have for the day. Level 1 spell slots are utilized on your lesser level 1 spells, whereas level 2 spell slots are used on your stronger level 2 spells. Higher-level spells are far more potent and will require the use of higher-level spell slots to perform.

Leveling up a spell-casting class unlocks more level spell slots and the ability to cast higher-level spells. Spells will be cast in a similar level spell slot. A higher-level spell slot can be used to cast a more powerful version of a lower-level spell for individuals who desire to employ a reinforced lower-level spell.

Preparing Spells And Recovering Spell Slots

A complete long rest will restore all of your spell slots, but a partial long rest will only return half of your spell slots. Some classes will have to choose whatever spells they have prepared for the day each day or level up.

You’ll be able to choose from all of your character’s spells and choose which ones you’ll have “equipped” to employ for the day here. You will be unable to employ a spell in combat if it is not prepared for the day.

With just a limited number of spells available during combat, it can help keep your list of prepared spells smaller and more obvious when determining what to perform in fight. As some classes level up, you will be able to prepare additional spells for the day.
