Speaking to animals offers several advantages in Baldur’s Gate 3. Animals can be discovered across the world of Baldur’s Gate 3 in the wilderness, cities, and settlements, providing information about treasure items and mysteries. Players can only learn about treasure items and mysteries through conversing with animals, which few players understand how to accomplish.
While druids can communicate with animals and comprehend what they say, other classes can as well. Fortunately, the Speak with Animals spell allows players to communicate with animals. Keeping this in mind, this tutorial will show players how to communicate with animals in Baldur’s Gate 3 as well as other useful information.

How to Speak to Animals in Baldur’s Gate 3
There are three ways to talk to animals which are:
Speak With Animals Spell
The Speak With Animals spell is a level 1 ritual spell earned via leveling up by the following classes. This spell is cast and lasts until the next long rest.
- Druid
- Barbarian (Wildheart Subclass)
- Bard (College of Lore & College of Valour Subclasses)
- Paladin (Oath of the Ancients Subclass)
- Ranger
- Warlock
Because this is a level 1 spell, you can opt to gain it for your primary character at Character Creation. If you do not, you will have the choice to gain the spell on each subsequent level up.
Potion Of Animal Speaking
Drinking the Potion of Animal Speaking casts the ‘Speak With Animals’ spell on the person who consumes it. The potion’s effects, like the spell’s, linger all day. This potion may be obtained in three ways.
- Exploration: In chests, barrels, and sacks of every variety.
- Vendors: Merchants in the druid grove often carry a potion. If you’re not having any luck, try buying it off of Volo, if he’s still in the grove.
- Alchemy: You can craft a potion yourself if you have Essence of Acorn Truffle and any Salt.
Transforming Into An Animal
All Druid characters have two easy options if they want to talk to animals.
- Cast Speak With Animals.
- Cast Wild Shape to transform into an animal.
As part of the leveling process, all Druid subclasses get the spell Wild Shape at level 2. Casting it will temporarily transform you into your chosen animal. Transforming into Wild Shape allows you to interact with any animal and start a convo with them.
That’s how to speak to animals in Baldur’s Gate 3 as I’ll see you in the next guide.
