The world of Baldur’s Gate 3 is full of mysteries and puzzles, and this strange Gilded Chest in the Owlbear Nest is undoubtedly one of them! The Owlbear Nest, as the name suggests, is a cavern that houses an injured owlbear and her pup. If you can sneak past her and go deeper into the cave, you’ll find a lovely alcove with a stone statue and a Gilded Chest.
If you fail the previous Arcana check and open the box without first inspecting your surroundings, your character will experience an unpleasant shock instead of riches. Here’s how to unlock the chest—and learn more about one of your buddies in the process!

Owlbear Nest Location
Walk west from the Silvanus’ Grove Waypoint (also known as the Druid Grove) until you come upon the dead (or dying) body of Edowin. Continue westward through a small waterfall until you find the entrance to the Owlbear Nest (X:94, Y:440), as seen above.
It should be noted that entering the cave will bring you face to face with an enraged mom owlbear and her youngster, which can be a deadly encounter for an unskilled explorer. If you do enter, be prepared to sneak, fight, or negotiate your way past one of the Sword Coast’s most dangerous predators.
How To Open The Gilded Chest
After you’ve dealt with the owlbears, proceed deeper into the cave to an alcove with a stream, flowers, a stone statue, and a gleaming Gilded Chest. If you don’t want to be surprised, avoid the Gilded Chest because it’s sealed by magic, can’t be selected, and touching it without following the proper methods will cause significant magical harm to your character.
In order to open the Gilded Chest in the Owlbear Nest, you’ll need to follow these instructions:
- Jump across the stream to reach the stone statue.
- Your character will automatically make a Perception (WIS) check. If you fail, don’t worry! You can send another party member over to try again.
- A successful Perception (WIS) check will reveal an item on the ground called “Selûne’s Prayer Sheet”. Pick it up, return to the chest, and read the Prayer Sheet.
- This will prompt your character to make a Religion (INT) check. Again, if your roll fails, pass the Prayer Sheet to another character to give it another shot.
- Once your character successfully deciphers the Prayer Sheet, the chest will be unlocked!
That’s how to open chest in Owlbear Cave in Baldur’s Gate 3 as I’ll see you in the next guide.
