The best thing to do (and this applies to everyone on the walkie-talkie) is to check to see whether you can chat to them whenever you enter a new screen or anything exciting happens in the plot. Always double-check, and if you have the opportunity to talk with him, do so.
It will take a number of talks, but you will finally get one with a lot of static. It’s an amazing sequence, and it may appear like Nick has perished. But don’t be concerned; he hasn’t.
